PROGRAM

Part 1 – Illustrating the difference between local breeds (adapted to difficult local conditions) and improved breeds (focused on production/productivity)

  • Status of animal genetic resources and strategic priorities—G. Leroy (FAO)
  • The role of crossbreeding in community dairy production systems – Y. Sanarana (ARC, South Africa).

Part 2 – Characterization, conservation, and improvement: from analyzing the genetic diversity and vulnerability of certain breeds (loss of diversity) to finding a balance between adaptive and productive traits

  • Generic approach to genetic diversity and vulnerability of local breeds – L. Flori (INRAE, France)
  • Molecular characterization of local resources (hardiness, gastrointestinal nematodes) – J. Mwacharo (ICARDA, Ethiopia)
  • Combining phenotypic and genotypic information to study and preserve the adaptive traits of South African local breeds – E. van Marle-Köster (University of Pretoria, South Africa)

Part 3 – Design and implementation of conservation/improvement programs. Community breeding programs

  • Community-based breeding programs (CBBP). Examples in East Africa involving small ruminants – A. Haile (ICARDA, Ethiopia)
  • Maghreb/Ruminants – S. Bedhiaf – Romdhani (INRAT, Tunisia)
  • Sub-Saharan Africa/Ruminants – L. H. Dossa (University of Abomey Calavi, Benin)

Part 4 – General participatory discussion (whiteboards) moderated by C. Dayo (CIRDES, Burkina Faso), M. Schill (INRAE, France), and S. Fabre (INRAE, France).
